New York, United States

Artist Residency

Supported by: Finnish Cultural Institute in New York & The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union

In November 2023 Vokal is participating in the Finnish Cultural Institute Residency in New York with our project titled "From the Ground Up”.

Throughout our residency, we are focusing on the study of community-based organizations and their role in climate adaptation within the urban planning of New York City. We intend to establish connections and collaborations with local actors involved in participatory urbanism. Our ultimate objective is to produce an online publication that explores how the insights gained can be applied within the Finnish context.

New York City has a rich history of citizen activism from 19th-century tenant movements to the protests against large-scale demolitions in the 1960s and Occupy Wall Street in the 2010s, to name just a few examples. Today, as the effects of climate change around the world are projected to exacerbate, the city has acknowledged that local communities should be part of climate adaptation in urban planning as they are the ones who bear the consequences of a changing climate.

From the Ground Up maps the community driven work in climate adaptation in New York City. During the month-long residency, we aim to learn from the work of community-based organizations, city planners, and pioneering practitioners in climate resilience and participatory urbanism through interviews and by participating in their work on the ground. In addition we are engaging the scholars of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union who are also partners of the residency. The residency period will culminate into a workshop engaging the local communities. The findings of the project will be shared in an open online publication.
